Treatment for Depression During Pregnancy

Peaceful Birth Relaxation CDs are proven to decrease depression during pregnancy. As well as reading the workbook, as it helps you eliminate your fears around labor and delivery, which can cause depression in pregnancy.

What's Creating Depression In Pregnancy?

Common theory has held that pregnancy creates a wholly new "hormonal mix" that typically "protects" women during pregnancy. However, a number of women are "falling through the cracks" and don't conform to this theory. So, what's contributing to depression in pregnancy? Usual suspects include hormones, stress, health, money matters, kids and husbands, a recent period of infertility.

How Do You Spot Pregnancy Depression?

You know the feeling. You feel increasingly helpless, as though you don't matter. Nothing seems to matter. Sleep is difficult. You're irritable, quick to temper and equally quick to cry. Energy levels catapult from high to low, and you're permanently restless. Food and diet just don't make sense, no matter what anyone suggests. And then the darkest thoughts begin to trickle towards the front of your mind...hurting your baby...even hurting yourself and suicidal tendencies.

Pregnancy is a life-altering event that can cause women to feel anxious, scared and often stressed. Prenatal depression seems to be increased in the first trimester, suggesting it is the time of maximum vulnerability. Experts believe that the rapid increase in hormone levels at the start of pregnancy can disrupt brain chemistry and lead to depression.

Depression can increase your risk of pre-term labor and lower birth rate. Counseling, has been shown to be effective in lessening depression and reducing the incident of postpartum depression. If you're uncertain about your state of mind, Don't be shy about letting your doctor or midwife know if you feel low. Your emotional health is just as important as your physical health.

If you've experienced three or more of the following symptoms for more than two weeks, talk to your healthcare provider about whether you should see a therapist:

• A sense that nothing feels enjoyable or fun anymore

• Feeling blue, sad, or "empty" for most of the day, every day

• Find it's harder to concentrate

• Extreme irritability or agitation or excessive crying

• Trouble sleeping or sleeping all the time

• Extreme or never-ending fatigue

• A desire to eat all the time or not wanting to eat at all

• Inappropriate guilt or feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness.

Treatment for depression in pregnancy.

Do something.
According to Dr. Chopra, "Inertia is depression's best friend." Do something. Take charge of your thoughts and emotions to help reclaim your power.

Start with Charlie Brown's teaching for beating depression. Sit and stand up straight. Try a smile. Don't worry if it feels phony or forced or even worse. Retrain yourself. Remember that you have to change a brain habit. Fake it 'til you make it.

Exercise Is one of the most beneficial natural remedies for depression. Moderate exercise raises feel good hormones and lowers chemicals that make you feel down. Commit to twenty minutes of exercise three or more times a week. A brisk walk, bicycling, or swimming are three good exercises. Go with someone you enjoy for healthful social interaction.

Eat healthy foods. Limit sugars and grains to normalize insulin and leptin which affects mood. Eat wild-caught salmon, sardines, herring or mackerel regularly to get plenty of Omega 3 fatty acids. If you don't like fish, take an Omega 3 product. There is a strong correlation between lack of Omega 3 fatty acids and depression.

Stay hydrated with pure water. The American Psychiatric Ass'n had a huge study that resulted in the discovery that the main difference between depressed and non-depressed populations was...drinking water!

Get safe sun exposure. Sunshine brightens the mood. If you cannot get enough sunshine in the winter and you notice a drop in your mood, consider using a light box. There is a correlation between lack of Vitamin D and depression. Ask your doctor to perform a blood test to see if you are deficient. Be sure to monitor blood levels if you take Vitamin D.

Meditate. Meditation helps you be in the present moment. It transforms your brain and helps you relax.

Practice Self-Love and Care
Your ultimate love and care come from yourself. Change stressful conditions as possible. Decide if the problem is something you can fix. Do you need to put up with it or can you/do you want to walk away? Feel empowered by the fact that you are making a choice.

Focus on relationships, instead of what's going on around you. Treat yourself and others with love, associate with people who inspire you. Do work or a hobby you love.

Try Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
The University of Michigan Depression Center found that over 75% of depressed patients experience significant improvement using Cognitive Behavior Therapy. CBT teaches you cognitive techniques to help identify and challenge your negative depressing thoughts. It teaches you behavioral techniques to help increase your activity levels and unleash your untapped energy you already have and improve your moods.

Try Herbs and Supplements
Certain herbs have a long history as natural remedies for depression. Unlike some depression drugs, they don't damage your liver.

St. John's Wort, Gingko Biloba and Eleuthero can all help when you feel a bit down. The herb rhodiola rosea is beneficial for anxiety and depression. It prompts the brain to make neurotransmitters such as serotonin. Taking COQ10 with it boosts that effect.

5-HTP are known for lifting your spirits.

Note that these remedies take time to work and aren't instant cures. Consult your doctor before taking any herbs or supplements when you are pregnant, especially if you are on medication to avoid negative interactions.

Often time depression in pregnancy is caused by being in a bad relationship. If that is the case the only cure is to get ot of that relationship. When a women get pregnant she can feel stuck, and that she has no choice but to stay in the relationship. If you are being abuse its not going to get better once the baby is born. Study show that it actually get worst after the baby is born. So if at all possible get out, and get safe. If you are unsure how to do that please feel free to email me. And I will send you info that can help you.

Because it was my first child, I wanted to be really well prepared for labour. The most valuable thing for me, about taking Elizabeth’s classes was that it removed ALL the fears that I had about childbirth. I was able to easily remain “calm and focused” throughout my labour. Rebecca Bone

I'll never forget you - you brought my beautiful daughter in to this world, It was a very peaceful delivery (though at the hospital and induced) but my daughter is like a little buddha. she is so sensitive, compassionate, with empathy. I like to think your contribution to the start of her life made some impact on her approach to the world. Thank you.

I really enjoyed your online course. The partners guide is very eye opening.

It definitely has given me the information I needed to confidently support my wife in labour.

Thank you so much for this wonderful course.  I just delivered my baby a few days ago and had an excellent labour.  I went from 18+ hours for my first baby to only 3 hours this time around.  I found the information very helpful!
