Ditch The Diaper: 7 Steps To Winning The Potty Wars

Preschool looms, and with it comes the growing realization that it's time to get serious about potty training. You're not quite sure your child is ready, but what can you do if your preschool doesn't allow diapers? Though your mother boasts that she taught you in three days, your friends are full of horror stories, and you have a neighbor whose four-year-old is known to have spectacular accidents in public places.

Don't despair. With a little strategy, you can lessen the chance that potty training will turn into a messy battle of wills.

Prepare The Troops

Readiness is everything when it comes to potty training. Your child has to be a willing participant in the process or else you'll find yourself in a fight that you cannot win. Most children are ready between the ages of 18 and 24 months, but for some reticent toddlers the time may not arrive until close to their fourth birthday. Before you consider starting the process, make sure your child:

• Pees or poops at regular times
• Stays dry for longer
• Acts uncomfortable in a dirty diaper
• Has already transferred from a crib to a bed
• Can dress by himself
• Can sit quietly for five minutes or so
• Is in a cooperative stage

Choose The High Ground

Correct timing is key. If there's a new caregiver coming, a new baby arriving, or you're changing apartments, you may want to wait until the dust settles before you begin. Pick a week clear of events when you can concentrate on setting up a consistent routine.

Gear Up

Go shopping together to gather the tools for training, like pull-ups, "big kid" underwear, a special kid seat, a step stool, or a special potty. For boys, make sure that the potty seat has a detachable urine guard, which can bump or scrape and make training a painful experience.

Strategize Accordingly

Make sure your child is dressed in clothes that are easy to pull off, such as sweatpants, skirts, or leggings, so they don't have to hold it in while fussing with zippers, buttons, or a belt. For boys, consider buying tinkle targets to make the effort a game. Most pediatricians recommend that you train boys sitting down rather than standing up, since they have to learn that position anyway. This position also prevents the boy from discovering how his body can be used as a squirt gun.

Charge!

Start training by setting up a routine of sitting your child on the potty at regular intervals. Read a book or play a game to make the time pass. Whether anything actually happens, praise him for trying, and then teach him or her the proper hygiene. Try 4-5 times a day and eventually you'll "catch" the moment. Some folks find it helpful to let their kids run around bottomless in the backyard during the warm weather, to make them more aware of when they're going.

Bring In Reinforcements

Positive reinforcement goes a long way. Reward your child for certain firsts, such as the first time peeing or pooping in the potty, first time going on their own, a full dry day, or a full dry night. Accidents will happen, so take them in stride. Be prepared with lots of wipes, new pull-ups, and an extra set of clothes.

Night Training: The Second Wave

It's not uncommon for an otherwise potty-trained child to occasionally wet the bed up to six months after potty training is complete. Pull-ups overnight may be a wise decision until the communication between bladder and brain matures. It'll help to cut out drinks about an hour before bed to minimize wetting, but don't be frustrated. For some children, complete bladder control comes later.

Correct timing and a calm introduction of the idea can go a lot way to making potty training a success. Before starting, check out these signs of
potty training readiness.

I wanted to tell you about new app,
SpoonCool is a dietary and educational app which helps make mealtime for young children more enjoyable and entertaining. Going back to the idea of, “Open wide, here comes the airplane”, SpoonCool uses that same mentality introducing children to an array of visuals which educate a child to the world around them, while simultaneously making mealtime easier via our 8 second videos; animals, transportation, songs, music and more. An adult selects from a vast catalog of videos (divided into categories), to play their child’s favorite visual. They hold the phone in one hand, and a spoon in the other, and while the video plays, the child is focused on the visual in front of them, and will always eat more. As well, thanks to SpoonCool, a child will be more open to receiving the new food they are given each time. SpoonCool is a fantastic tool for introducing not only food, but sounds and visuals for a child’s core development.  Click Here for more info, goo.gl/3iQBNk

What not to say to women in labour!

The Best Labor Aid recipe.

You will want to eat and drink light, healthy foods during labor. If you eat and drink during labor, then you don’t need an IV. Labor is work, calories are needed for your body to work effectively, and in order to have the energy you need to give birth.

Starving yourself and becoming dehydrated during childbirth can lead to complications. If you have to get an IV, It will keep you from moving freely during labor, but it is movement that helps you give birth faster and easier. The use of IVs can cause other complications, such as fluid overload and hyperglycemia for both mother and baby. And you can find yourself in the “cascade of interventions”, where one intervention leads to more interventions.

But don’t drink sports drinks or energy drinks as they can actually make things more difficult for you in labor.

The Ingredients used in these drinks can affect you and your baby’s heart rate and blood pressure. As they contain very high levels of caffeine. Some brands have as much as 8x the amount of caffeine as 1 cup of coffee.

If your baby’s heart rate goes to high and stays high this can cause fetal distress and you could end up with a c-session to get the baby out right away.

During labor you need you have a drink that is both refreshing and hydration. As well as gives you an energy boost.

Each one of the ingredients in this labor aid is important in labor.

Lemon juice is very useful in digestion related problems. It can give relief from nausea, heartburn and bloating. So often in labor women have an upset stomach. As well lemon just tastes good, and makes it more enjoyable to drink the labor aid.

The reason to use coconut water instead of just tap water is it’s packed with simple sugar, electrolytes, and minerals to replenish hydration levels in the body. It's important to maintain your electrolyte level for proper cell function and for energy.

Sea salt helps with muscle contraction and expansion and rehydration.

Bach flower rescue remedy, helps you stay calm and focused, with no side effect to you or baby.

Calcium and magnesium assist in muscle and nerve activities. These two minerals help the muscles to relax or contract. Calcium is involved in blood clotting, protecting you from losing too much blood, especially if you tear in childbirth.

Honey is used for its great taste and to give you energy.

Here is my recipe for “ Labour Aid”

¼ cup fresh squeezed lemon juice

2 cups coconut water

¼ tsp sea salt

a few drops of rescue remedy

1 Tbsp of liquid calcium/magnesium

2 Tbsp of honey

Enjoy,

Elizabeth

A quick and easy way to make a beautiful website.

One of the challenges commonly faced by single parents is juggling between work and family and the need to be at more than one place at a time.

The most common thought that passes the mind is “I wish I had more time and money”. Have you ever felt like that?

Fulfilling children’s need can be the most rewarding experience. It can also be a motivating factor for many parents, who then drive themselves to take on more challenges and be successful in achieving financial freedom. Parents enjoy spending the money for their children, and if at all more time becomes available as a result, that is a bonus. That sounds like we are in a perfect position.

Are we?

Parenting is lot more than spending money and time with the children.

We are living in a world full of information, and parents are generally less strict towards their children compared to the traditional parenting style. Children are constantly exposed to a variety of situations, where they seek to know the right thing to do, occasionally dwell in dilemma or simply choose to proceed along a direction which we as parents would not approve of.

Hence, today’s parents need leadership capabilities to walk along with their children further than one normally does and thus develop a strong and loving bond.

Being single parent, it is even more important to have a stable system of income generation that provides a good balance of time and money, and also provides a mechanism to develop oneself to be the guiding light for the family.

For more information on a business opportunity that allows you exactly to do that, you are very welcome to reach out to me at

"Protecting Children's Health"

Ultimately, all five papers call for increased research to identify the possible environmental causes of autism in America’s children.

This importance of this call to action can not be emphasized enough, because while our children may only represent 30% of our population, they are 100% of our future and we need to protect them like our country depends on it.  Because it does.

So what can you do to protect the health of your children?  Thankfully a lot.  And while none of us can do everything, all of us can do something, so choose one, some or all from the list below:

*  Eat organic food whenever possible to reduce exposure to synthetic pesticides which by law are not allowed for use in its production

 *  Read websites like drugnews.net and keep an eye out for medications that you might be using that could be potentially dangerous.

With the increase of people filing yaz lawsuits again the drug company Bayer, doctors are looking at birth control as a possible factor in autism.

* Open your window to clear the air in your home, from the toxins that accumulate there.

* Take your shoes off as you come inside to keep pesticides on the soles of your shoes from entering your home.

* Look for cans and bottles that are “BPA-free”

The biggest study of its kind suggests autism might be linked with inducing and speeding up labour, preliminary findings that need investigating since labour is induced in increasing numbers of U.S. women, the authors and other autism experts say.

It's possible that labour-inducing drugs might increase the risk — or that the problems that lead doctors to start labour explain the results. These include mothers' diabetes and fetal complications, which have previously been linked with autism.

There is a growing consensus that risks for autism occur before birth or soon after. There is a growing consensus that risks for autism occur before birth or soon after.(Veejay Villafranca/Getty )

Like most research into autism causes, the study doesn't provide conclusive answers, and the authors say the results shouldn't lead doctors to avoid inducing labour or speeding it up since it can be life-saving for mothers and babies.

Simon Gregory, lead author and an associate professor of medicine and medical genetics at Duke University, emphasized, "We haven't found a connection for cause and effect. One of the things we need to look at is why they were being induced in the first place."

Government data suggest 1 in 5 U.S. women have labour induced — twice as many as in 1990.

Smaller studies suggested a possible tie between induced labour and autism, but the new research is the largest to date, involving more than 600,000 births. The government-funded study was published online Monday in JAMA Pediatrics.

The researchers examined eight years of North Carolina birth records, and matched 625,042 births with public school data from the late 1990s through 2008. Information on autism diagnoses didn't specify whether cases were mild or severe. Labour was induced or hastened in more than 170,000 births.

Overall, 5,648 children developed autism — three times as many boys as girls. Among autistic boys, almost one-third of the mothers had labour started or hastened, versus almost 29 per cent of the boys without autism. The differences were less pronounced among girls.

Oxytocin and prostaglandins are used to start or speed up labour but the study doesn't identify specific medications.

The strongest risks were in boys whose mothers had labour started and hastened. They were 35 per cent more likely to have autism.

Among girls, autism was not tied to induced labour; it was only more common in those born after labour was accelerated; they were 18 per cent more likely to have the developmental disorder than girls whose mothers had neither treatment.

Autism affects about 1 in 88 U.S. children. Symptoms may involve communication problems including avoiding eye contact and unusual repetitive behaviour including arm-flapping. Causes are uncertain but experts believe it probably results from a combination of genetics and other factors. These may include mothers' illnesses and medication use while pregnant, fathers' age at conception, and problems affecting the fetus during childbirth — all suggested but not proven in previous research.

The study's biggest strength is bolstering the growing consensus that risks for autism occur before birth or soon after, said Dr. Byron King, director of Seattle Children's Hospital's autism centre. He was not involved in the study.

The reality of sleeping with your baby, but its still worth it!

I believe getting over your fears of child birth during pregnancy, is the most important thing you can do to have a Peaceful birth experience.

Relaxation is one of the most helpful techniques for pain relief. Let your body do what it is supposed to do. While your uterus is contracting, relax the rest of your body so your energy isn't working against you. Relaxation is something that must be practiced throughout your pregnancy—don’t just go into labor and expect yourself to be able to relax on command. The ability to relax during stressful situations is a skill that you can master. There are several different ways to do this. Practice with your labour partner throughout your pregnancy to find out what works for you. For me, it was to have my husband stroke my hair. For someone else it may be massage. It's funny to think that relaxing is a SKILL. The following are some suggestions to try for relaxing.

* Massage

* Bathing or showering

* Listening to music

* Deep breathing

* Meditation

* Yoga

* Visualization

Foods to avoid during pregnancy. Cheese recalled over Listeria fears, which it can be potentially fatal for unborn babies.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control has issued a warning for people not to eat some organic cheese produced by a company on Saltspring Island.

The agency says the Tomme d'Or cheese, manufactured by Moonstruck Organic Cheese, may be contaminated by Listeria bacteria.

The disease control centre says no illnesses have been linked to Tomme d'Or cheese, but anyone who bought the product is urged to throw it out or to return it to the store where it was bought.

Listeriosis disease, which is caused by eating food contaminated with Listeria bacteria, is treatable with antibiotics.

However, it can be potentially fatal for pregnant women, unborn babies seniors and newborns, as well as anyone with a weakened immune system.

Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, vomiting and headaches.

 Natural Childbirth Tip

Avoid caffeine when you are pregnant

You should limit the amount of caffeine you have each day. Caffeine affects the way your body absorbs iron, which is very important for your baby's development. High levels of caffeine can result in a baby having a low birth weight, or even miscarriage.

Caffeine occurs naturally in a range of foods, such as coffee, tea and chocolate. It's also added to some soft drinks and 'energy' drinks.

Some cold and flu remedies also contain caffeine, so always check with your pharmacist and read the labels yourself before taking any medicines while you’re pregnant.

Top 10 Chemicals Most Likely to Cause Autism and Learning Disabilities

This morning, the Mount Sinai Children’s Environmental Health Center (CEHC) released a list of the top ten toxic chemicals suspected to cause autism and learning disabilities.

This list can’t come soon enough, as last month, the CDC reported that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) now affects 1 of every 88 American children – a 23% increase from 2006 and a 78% increase from 2002.

And while there is controversy over how those numbers are reached, it still is worth repeating.  There has been a 78% increase in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in the last ten years.  At the same time, the CDC also reported that ADHD now affects 14% of American children.

As these disorders continue to affect more children across the U.S., researchers are asking what is causing these dramatic increases.  Some of the explanation is greater awareness and more accurate diagnosis. But clearly, there is more to the story than simply genetics, as the increases are far too rapid to be of purely genetic origin.

According to the Mount Sinai Children’s Environmental Health Center (CEHC) release this morning and data from the research article, “Environmental Pollutants and Disease in American Children (July 2002), “the National Academy of Sciences reports that 3% of all neurobehavioral disorders in children are caused directly by toxic exposure in the environment and another 25% disorders are caused by interactions between environmental factors and genetics. But the precise environmental causes are not yet known”. (Note: the first version of this article included a link to the National Academy of Sciences study from 2000 and has been updated to include a link to the July 2002 study).

So while industry can claim that there is little evidence that these chemicals in isolation or in combination (which doctors now refer to as “synergistic toxicity”) cause autism, the truth is that there is still very little evidence or the toxicological safety studies.  In other words, there is a gap in the science.

There is a huge gap.  According to CNN, the EPA has tested only about 200 of the 80,000 chemicals in use.

But thankfully, that is changing with the work of the team at Mt. Sinai and the extraordinary leadership, courage and intellect of Dr. Phil Landrigan and the urgent call by experts to reform chemical laws.

To guide a research strategy to discover potentially preventable environmental causes and to arm parents and those hoping to be parents with knowledge, the Children’s Environmental Health Center (CEHC) has developed a list of ten chemicals found in consumer products that are suspected to contribute to autism and learning disabilities.

This list was published today in Environmental Health Perspectives in an editorial written by Dr. Philip J. Landrigan, director of the CEHC, Dr. Linda Birnbaum, director of the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and Dr. Luca Lambertini, also of the CEHC.

The top ten chemicals are:

  1. Lead
  2. Methylmercury
  3. PCBs
  4. Organophosphate pesticides
  5. Organochlorine pesticides
  6. Endocrine disruptors
  7. Automotive exhaust
  8. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
  9. Brominated flame retardants
  10. Perfluorinated compounds

As the Children’s Environmental Health Center shares, the editorial was published alongside four other papers — each suggesting a link between toxic chemicals and autism.  Both the editorial and the papers originated at a conference hosted by CEHC in December 2010.

The first paper, written by a team at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, found preliminary evidence linking smoking during pregnancy to Asperger’s disorder and other forms of high-functioning autism.  The next two papers, written by researchers at the University of California – Davis, show that PCBs disrupt early brain development. The final paper, also by a team at UC – Davis, suggests further exploring the link between pesticide exposure and autism.

Thankfully, a lot.  And while none of us can do everything, all of us can do something, so choose one, some or all from the list below:

  • Eat organic food whenever possible to reduce exposure to synthetic pesticides which by law are not allowed for use in its production
  • Open your windows to clear the air in your home from the toxins that can accumulate there
  • Take your shoes off as you come inside to keep pesticides on the soles of your shoes from entering your home
  • Look for cans and plastic bottles that are “BPA-free”

You need freedom of movement in labor. If you can, get up and walk. Sway. Bring a birthball and bounce on it. Some women like to rock back and forth on all fours. If you must stay in bed, labor on your side or in a supported squat. Don't get stuck on your back. Being forced to labor on your back causes increased pain for you, it slows labor, and it decreases blood flow to your baby.

Emotional Well-Being in labor

Rely on companionship and support. Let those around you know what you want and need.

Practice relaxation, focusing, and breathing together with your partner to build trust and confidence.

Have confidence in your body's ability to cope with labor and the birth of your baby.

Think of your baby.

Figure out what your needs are and communicate them.

Focus on something positive that you see, hear, feel, smell, taste or imagine.

Pray or meditate.

Do affirmations, visualizations.

Expect the unexpected.

Concentrate only on the moment and on responding to this one contraction.
