Pregnancy timeline

0-4 weeks


  1. Start/continue taking folic acid
  2. Stop smoking.
  3. Stop drinking alcohol.
  4. Avoid all recreational drugs.
  5. Research your childbirth choices.

5-8 weeks

  1. You may start to feel sick for the next three weeks. This is most likely due to a rise in hormone levels. Ginger is a natural stomach settler; however talk your GP if you feel overwhelmed by the feelings of nausea.
  2. Make your first appointment with your doctor/midwife.
  3. If you are planning to go overseas check with your doctor/midwife if you are able to have any necessary vaccinations.
  4. Consider your safety at work.
  5. Make a dentist appointment.
  6. Book your prenatal classes.
  7. Learn how to let go of fear and anxiety using Peaceful birth Cds.

9-12 weeks

  1. Have your ultrasound.
  2. Start pregnancy exercising and/or consider modifying existing exercise program.

13 - 16 weeks

  1. Announce your pregnancy
  2. Stop taking Folic Acid now unless your doctor advises otherwise
  3. Research maternity entitlements and the baby bonus.

17 - 20 weeks

  1. Start maternity clothes shopping.
  2. May have another ultrasound to test for physical abnormalities.

21 - 24 weeks

  1. Start preparing the nursery.
  2. Notify your employer in writing about your pregnancy.

25 - 28 weeks


  1. Begin prenatal classes.
  2. Start shopping for baby equipment/supplies. It will help your budget to spread the cost over a number of weeks.

29 - 32 weeks

  1. Pack your hospital bag
  2. Write your birth plan
  3. Organise a professional photographic session of your gorgeous belly

33 - 36 weeks

  1. If you are having twins you cannot travel by plane after 32 weeks.
  2. Check you have the baby basics organised.
  3. Organise baby announcement stationery.
  4. Buy two nursing bras, breast pads and sanitary pads.
  5. Write your birth plan
  6. Stock up on groceries and make a few meals to freeze for when you first come home.
  7. Book a diaper service if you plan to use one.
  8. Understand what an Apgar score tells you about the health of your newborn baby.

37 - 40 weeks


  1. If you are pregnant with a single baby you cannot travel by air after 36 weeks.
  2. Keep the digital camera and cell phone charged at all times.
  3. Discuss your birth plan with your birth partner and doctor/midwife
  4. Make a list of phone numbers for your partner. SMS is the easiest and quickest way to let everyone know baby has arrived.
  5. Find the quickest route to the hospital.
  6. Have your birth partner fill in a diary with their activities and location for the next few weeks so you know where he or she is at all times.
  7. Take time out just for you with a pregnancy massage, have your nails done (but don't put on any nail polish) and have your hair cut.
